The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, based on the novel by J.R. Tolkien and the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, was met with much excitement by many, and the first of eventually three parts set an intriguing precedent for the later films. An engaging tale in which a respectable young hobbit Bilbo agrees unexpectedly to accompany thirteen dwarves and a wizard Gandalf on an expedition to the Lonely Mountain in order to defeat the dragon Smaug and reclaim the dwarves’ fortune. Along the journey the assembly endures much misfortune, and Bilbo struggles to attain the group’s trust, battling especially for affirmation from the troop’s head Thorin. Ultimately he succeeds and the dwarves reclaim the mountain, finally achieving their mission. Afterwards Bilbo returns to his hobbit hole in the Shire, though now a very different hobbit. This story has been greatly celebrated since it’s installation, creating many beloved characters and stories. Because of this, there are many cardboard cutouts and other decorations for several of the characters, allowing Hobbit enthusiasts to recreate key events in the story, or just have them because they are awesome.

When we initially encounter Bilbo he is a highly respectable hobbit living in the Shire, not wanting anything to do with adventure however Gandalf convinces him to accompany the dwarves on their quest, eventually transforming him into a much less reserved and exciting hobbit. This standee of Bilbo depicts him prepared yet somewhat overwhelmed for the journey, having no clue of the dangers he will soon face.

Gandalf is very wise and shows up just in time on many occasions, saving the group’s necks more than once. The wizard is shown with his long staff and billowing robes, portraying the fact that he is quite a force to be reckoned with.

Thorin, the extremely proud king of the dwarves, is the group’s leader, and also not a very big believer in Bilbo’s abilities. Time after time again he publically voices his doubts about Bilbo, yet in the end he is finally appreciative. The fierce dwarf is a sight to behold in battle, and in this cutout he might not be fighting, but any second he could whip out a sword.

Kili, one of the youngest dwarves along with his brother Fili, is a great fighter, especially skilled with a bow and arrow. He is one of many dwarves, but definitely one to look out for.
